How an Interactive Platform Strengthens Knowledge Management and Knowledge Work

Knowledge is considered one of the most important resources within organisations. This is also reflected in the responses from the HAYS study “Knowledge Work in Transition”. However, if knowledge workers specialise too heavily in a narrow field, they become even more vulnerable to the dynamic changes of the labour market. This is why it is valuable to use an interactive platform to strengthen knowledge management and ensure the organisation’s long-term viability.

Fewer Routine Tasks through Digitalisation and Automation

Hardly anything transforms our daily lives and the world of work as profoundly as digital transformation. New technological developments, process adjustments, innovative working models, the effects of digital change are visible everywhere. These shifts can also be observed in the way knowledge is created and shared within organisations. While the study does not yet provide definitive figures, HAYS anticipates that routine tasks for knowledge workers will decline over the coming years. Interactive platforms such as social intranets can support this development. The positive effects are obvious: more time can be invested in high-value tasks, in generating new knowledge, and in developing competencies.

Employees and Organisations Respond to the Need for Development

Employees who focus too narrowly on a specific field take on a considerable risk. The labour market is constantly changing under the influence of digital transformation. There is a real possibility that outdated knowledge may no longer be needed and specialised positions may disappear. Already today, 60% of professionals further develop topics in their free time. Nearly half invest in training at their own expense. Many organisations have also recognised the need for action and have initiated measures to strengthen knowledge work. Employees with a broad knowledge base contribute to the competitiveness of the organisation. According to the study, these measures primarily focus on modernising IT infrastructures, establishing new training and leadership concepts, and creating more flexibility regarding working hours and locations, challenges that can be effectively addressed with an interactive platform.

Promoting Knowledge Management and Forward-Thinking Action with an Interactive Platform

Digital solutions for knowledge management are indispensable for the future world of work. They create time for crucial work processes that were previously impacted by heavy routine workloads. Many respondents currently experience a high level of strain. On the one hand, expectations of employees in the digital age continue to rise. On the other hand, standardised tasks have not decreased in many places. There is simply a lack of time to expand personal competencies. Social intranets can help here. Their features save time in everyday work, for example, information is easier to find and knowledge from other areas of the organisation can be accessed at any time.

Another issue highlighted by participants is the lack of support they receive as knowledge workers. Knowledge creates competitive advantages, and knowledge carriers should be motivated accordingly. Leadership must therefore provide continuous feedback — including through digital channels. A simple “thumbs up” for an insightful post can already make a difference. This also helps flatten hierarchies and reduces the feeling of being overly controlled.

A social intranet proves particularly valuable in distributing knowledge. Thanks to numerous communication and collaboration options, silo thinking between departments can be dissolved. Knowledge is shared and accessible to everyone. This creates new learning opportunities, and users’ competencies evolve through successful, interactive collaboration.

Conclusion

Ensuring Organisational Competitiveness

With social intranets, a broad knowledge base can be established. This benefits not only individual employees. Organisations can strengthen their knowledge management and thus secure their future viability. After all, skilled and competent employees are an organisation’s most important asset.
